this 120 years old elaborately carved monumental container was used to hold food consumed during the investment rituals of Dogon religious leaders known as Hogon. at the apex of the vessel two heroic equestrian figures representing the hogons , the horse apart from symbol of wealth and prestige equates the hogons with Nommo the mythic being that transformed itself into a horse carrying the Dogon's primordial ancestors to earth.
